Similar to the recent storm hit the northwest the prior day, the home side blew Manchester United aside at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil victory for the City coach's side due to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their championship potential as they strengthened their standing at the top of the table.

Consecutive Defeats for United

This outcome marked consecutive WSL setbacks for Skinner's side for the first time since spring 2024, placing them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capability to balance domestic and European football with a small team has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the Champions League. Considering the calendar, it always appeared this was the matchday that would fully examine this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they looked fatigued throughout, the landmark win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a a few changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the omission of the on-form Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no similar fitness issues. Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The trouble started to gather for the United boss and his squad from the kickoff. This was a exhibition of the quality from City whose potent offense played with and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them put three past the keeper in just over twenty minutes.

Early Chances

The early indicators came soon when Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Lauren Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, taking advantage of the gap left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right side. Her deliveries were posing a threat and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg kicked off the line.

United had a number of forays ahead, their direct style giving them choices in the wide areas but they could not test the City goalkeeper. Manchester City, on the other hand, dominated possession, teasing their opposition and trying to lure them of their organization.

Triple Strike

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from Skinner at the break as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the match. Former Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, hitting the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and did not manage to register a single shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have added to their lead when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the winning team. Previously unable to overcome any team who placed above them the previous campaign, City's side now have victories against Arsenal and Manchester United to put them in a commanding situation after nine games.
